Field nights have been busy for me lately. Wednesday, we marked about 200 flies, and last night we marked about 90. There were only 6 returners, and the low numbers were a little surprising, but I'm going out for the next several nights in a row, so I'm sure I'll get good numbers.
I did talk to a few Big Losers. They were taking a walk down to Mulholland highway and back up to the mansion. One couple asked me what I was up to. I said "Field work", what are you studying? "Well, I'm looking at this fly that parasitizes a cricket (laugh)", OHohh (in the tone of "that's nice, c'mon honey, let's get out of here"). So I'm basically famous now.
Anyway, here's a video of the flies responding to my recorded cricket song. They're pretty tenacious.
